As the vibrant summer fades into autumn, the Cotswolds transforms into a tapestry of golden and terracotta. It's my favourite time of year to be outside - the fields have been harvested and the hedgerows are full of coloured foliage, berries and pheasants!
Autumn weddings are perfect for couples who want to embrace the warmth and romance of the season, with flowers that reflect the natural beauty of the changing landscape. The cooler temperatures also make it easier to work with lush, long-lasting flowers, perfect for creating dramatic displays that capture the richness of the season.
My Favourite Autumn Flowers:
Dahlias:Â Known for their intricate, symmetrical petals, dahlias are a favorite for autumn weddings. They come in a wide range of vibrant colours like burgundy, deep red, orange, but also delicate pinks and creamy champagnes. Their large blooms create striking focal points in bouquets and centrepieces, adding depth and drama to your floral arrangements.There is not a Dahlia that I don't love so please banish thoughts of Grandad's allotments and come with me to discover the sheer breadth and wonder of this flower family.
Amaranthus: With its long, trailing strands, amaranthus adds a touch of drama and texture to fall floral arrangements. Its deep red, burgundy, or green hues complement autumn’s rich colour palette, making it a stunning addition to cascading bouquets or hanging floral installations.
Berries:Â These tiny, colourful berries add a unique texture to autumn arrangements. Available in shades of white, terracotta, red, salmon and green, they are perfect for accenting bouquets, boutonnieres, and table centrepieces, giving your flowers a rustic, hedgerow-inspired feel.
China Asters:Â Known as the "star" flower, asters add a touch of whimsy and elegance, perfect for bouquets and centrepieces.
Chrysanthemums:Â These long-lasting flowers come in a variety of shapes and sizes, making them perfect for adding depth to autumn arrangements.
Grasses: I'm a huge fan of grasses for adding movement and textures to bouquets and boutonnières.
For this autumn wedding in the Cotswolds, I added silky miscanthus grasses and terracotta amaranthus to Carly's bouquet together with some autumn beech leaves - super textured and lots of movement. The deep burgundy dahlias and chocolate cosmos added the darker tones to the bouquet recipe with velvety 'Red Naomi' roses and some lighter shades of champagne stocks.
